Joanne Aieta

Joanne Marie Aieta (née Devoe), 88, of Northampton, MA died April 23, 2019 at the Cooley-Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, MA. She was born June 20, 1930 in Boston, MA, daughter of the late Charles L. And Grace (Goodrich) Devoe. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Waltham, MA, in 1947, of Regis College with a B.A. in Education in 1955, and of Framingham State with an M.E.d. in 1973. Joanne took vows in the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1947, working as a teacher in Boston, Winthrop, Natick, and Santa Fé, NM. Upon leaving the order, she worked in libraries at Brandeis, Bentley, and Babson, married, and raised two children before returning to teaching or librarian work in Marlborough and on Cape Cod. A lifelong educator, who was also interested in photography, gemstone art, and gardening, Joanne taught people of all ages from pre-school through adulthood. She leaves two children, Nicholas Aieta of Westfield, MA and Melissa Graham of Portland, CT, two sisters, Patricia McDonough of Bedford, MA and Mary O’Connor of Hingham, MA and two sisters-in-law, Mary Lawton Devoe of Bedford, MA and Gwendolyn Y. Devoe of Greenland, NH. She also leaves five grandchildren, Willa and Callum Aieta of Westfield, MA and Evangeline, Fiona, and Charlee Graham of Portland, CT. She was pre-deceased by her brother-in-law Neil O’Connor, brothers Charles and John Devoe, Richard Devoe, sister Grace O’Connor and brother-in-law Tom O’Connor. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 10 at St. Brigid Church, Lexington with internment at Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
